Extracurricular

The staff at École Nicholas Sheran School provide a wide variety of enrichment activities for our students on Friday mornings. These may include:  sports, gymnastics, hand bells, environmental education, crafts, math activities and more.  This is a great opportunity for staff to share their passion with students and to Sharpen the Saw together.

In addition to our Friday Enrichment, we offer grade 5 Basketball, running club, Junior and Senior Choir and Handbell Choir either at noon, recess or after school.  There are also student-led clubs organized by our administrative team that are held during the recess times at some points of the year.

Junior Choir

Welcome to Junior Choir

Junior choir is for students in Grades 1 and 2.  Students will get the opportunity to learn new music, further develop their singing technique, and perform for a variety of audiences.  If you and your child decide that joining choir is a commitment you are wanting to make, then here are a few things you’ll need to know.

  1. Practices will be on Wednesdays after school from 3:35-4:15 pm. Our first practice will be after school on Wednesday, October 2nd.  Students are asked to make a commitment until the end of December and can then decide whether they would like to rejoin choir in the new year.

  2. Once the bell rings, students will have enough time to use the bathroom and eat a quick snack before choir begins at 3:35 pm.  Students in BLAST must go to BLAST to check in before coming to choir.

  3. Parents are responsible for ensuring that their child will be picked up at 4:15 pm after every practice.  Please let me know if you and your child have a meeting spot that will not be the music room, so that I know where they will be picked up.

  4. It is very important that students attend each practice, so they have enough time to learn the music.  If students miss 2 or more practices, they may not be permitted to attend an upcoming performance.

Thank you!

Handbells

Welcome to Handbells

Handbell choir is for students in Grades 4 and 5.  Please review the following points with your child before making the commitment to join handbells.

  1. Practices will be on Thursdays after school from 3:35-4:15 pm. Our first practice will be after school on Thursday, October 3rd.  Students are asked to make a commitment until the end of December and can then decide whether they would like to rejoin choir in the new year.

  5. Only a maximum of 8 students will be chosen for the group, as there are a limited number of bells.  Not everyone will be able to participate if more than 8 students show interest.  The first 8 students to hand in their permission forms and be able to commit to all practices and performances will be chosen for the handbell choir.

Thank you!

Basketball

The Grade 5 basketball season begins in January.  This is a fun non-competitive league for students of all abilities to learn skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.  École Nicholas Sheran School will have 3 teams in the league.  Parent drivers will be required to take students to our away games and individual parents will be responsible for picking up students after the games.

The league will run Mondays and Wednesdays after school, games will start around 3:45/4:00pm depending on travel time to the schools and should end between 4:45/5:00pm. Team practices typically take place during enrichment.

Running Club

The running program is for all runners of all abilities and we encourage everyone to come out and give it a try. Students will meet in the front foyer at noon on Mondays and Wednesdays.  The running club is for all kids who are interested in joining the Runners Soul – Little Souls Marathon.

Each participant is given a run log sheet and a simple plan that can be followed at home for their extra runs outside of the run club. We will meet as a club on Mondays and Wednesdays, each runner will need to log approx. 2km of running per day combined to get to the 40.2km between May 8th and May 29th.  The goal of the Runners Soul – Little Souls Marathon is to get kids out/active/running, with the distance of 42.2km over one month. The group will run a total of 40.2 km during the month with the final 2km run held at Chinook High School.  You can register your child online or download the entry form at https://raceroster.com/events/2019/20963/little-souls-2019. The cost is $25 for the race. There is no cost to the ENSS running club itself.

The group runs and plan will be led by Danny Robdrup, a local triathlete and coach with an Exercise Science Diploma from Lethbridge College. Please have your child bring shorts, running shirt and proper footwear (no Heely’s or other heavy footwear), sunscreen along with a good water bottle with their name on it. Also, as we are in rainy season we may have to prepare for some wet conditions, ensure a light jacket is with them at the beginning of the day. In the case of very adverse conditions, we will resort to using the gym.

Parents are welcome to join their child(ren) as long as they have filled out an annual parent volunteer form in the office. They must check in and check out at the office each time as well.
